AIC Director Dan Sumner presents the 43rd Annual James C. Snyder Memorial Lecture at Purdue University

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Daniel A. Sumner, the Frank H. Buck, Jr., Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, was the guest speaker for Purdue University’s prestigious 43rd Annual James C. Snyder Memorial Lecture.

Sumner, who has been featured in news stories for the Los Angeles Times, Fortune magazine, CBS and CNBC, will present on the topic of “Farm Practice and Food Trade Across States and Nations.” In recent articles, he has shared his expertise on topics ranging from farm subsidies to foreign trade policies.

Sumner has extensive experience in research, teaching, and leading outreach programs on public issues facing agriculture. The Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) has honored him for his agricultural policy contributions. He also has been recognized with AAEA awards for his work as an author.

Sumner previously served as the assistant secretary for economics at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he was involved in policy formulation and analysis on food and farm programs, rural development, resources and other opportunities and challenges facing agriculture and rural America.

As supervisor for the USDA’s economics and statistics agencies, Sumner was responsible for data collection, outlook and research.

As the 2017 James C. Snyder Memorial Lecture guest speaker, Sumner joins a list of top professionals in agricultural business and economics who have been invited to present to staff, students and other guests. The lecture series is the Department of Agricultural Economics’ signature event at Purdue University.

The series was established in 1975 to memorialize and encourage the continuation of the work and accomplishments of James C. Snyder, who served as a professor and researcher in agricultural economics at Purdue.
